In "Loss and Desire", featuring Janine Antoni her work makes bold statements intended to make the viewer think. I find it to be effective in this endeavor. However, I found the work to be more of a performing art than a true fine art. Take the work in which she painted with her hair for example, the statement is made by the process not the work itself. I prefer art in which the work stands alone and speaks for itself. Her work seems to be largely work of self discovery and reflection. I find this work hard to appreciate, she makes her point that is clear but beyond that I lose interest. Her work is about the process more than the product. I find the art form more in how she makes it than the end product. I can appreciate the creativity with which she develops the concepts like "Lick and Lather", but in many of the other works I feel like she is reaching. To me this is evident in the piece where she dipped herself in lard, it is simply the most dramatic way of making her statement.
